From Combat to Classroom: Mark Hertling Appointed Professor of Practice in Leadership

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Mark Hertling ’19DBA as Professor of Practice in Leadership at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College. With an illustrious career marked by exemplary leadership and a commitment to excellence, Mark brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our esteemed faculty. Throughout his career, Mark has demonstrated a deep understanding of leadership theory and practice, coupled with a passion for inspiring others to reach their full potential.

Lieutenant General (retired) Mark Hertling served for 38 years in the U.S. Army as a tanker and cavalryman, commanding at every level from tank platoon to Field Army, and retired from the military in 2013. He finished his Army career as the Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe in 2012, where he oversaw 60,000 soldiers and partnered with the armies of 51 nations. He served over three years in combat, including commanding the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division (1AD) and Task Force Iron in Northern Iraq for 15 months during the surge.

From 2013 to 2018, he served as a Senior Vice President for Global Partnering and Leadership Development at AdventHealth in Orlando. His book, Growing Physician Leaders, describes his development of his healthcare leader program at the organization, and this work provides leadership lessons for those in the healthcare industry. He has since taught this course at several other healthcare systems, and there are now over 1,200 physician, nurse, and administrator graduates.

Mark received a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy in 1975, and he holds three master’s degrees: a master’s in kinesiology from Indiana University’s School of Public Health, a master’s in military arts and sciences from the U.S. Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies, and a master’s in international relations and security studies from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. In 2019, Mark received a Doctor of Business Administration from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College, defending research addressing physician leadership in the healthcare industry.

In his role as Professor of Practice in Leadership, Mark will play a pivotal role in enriching our leadership curriculum and guiding our students toward success. His insights and mentorship will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the development of our future business visionaries.
